When Mayor Charel Parker took office, he made a promise to improve Kensington.

It’s part of his commitment to make the city safe, clean, green, and provide economic opportunities for everyone.

On Saturday, a church in Philadelphia started working on that plan.

A collaborative effort led by Pastor Craig Serito of Rock Ministries, Philadelphia, said, “We’ve recruited several volunteers. We’ve sent them out today for a kickoff event, but we’ll continue these efforts in the coming weeks.”

Rock Ministries members joined forces on Saturday morning near Somerset Street and Kensington Avenue to work on improvements in the neighborhood. Riding up and down Kensington Avenue, you can see the conditions for community living each day.

Serito said, “Being one of the toughest communities in the United States, Kensington has an international reputation, which is definitely impacted by the trade of narcotics and the signs of narcotic trafficking.”

According to Rock Ministries, the City of Philadelphia has asked them to assist in cleaning up Kensington, reaching out to the homeless, and dealing with drug addiction on the streets.

Pedro Rosario, Philadelphia’s Deputy Commissioner, said, “It’s clear, our situation in Kensington is incredibly complex.”

For the next few months, they will continue their efforts in the community to assist the city in its efforts to improve public safety.

Serito added, “Listen, Kensington is in trouble. We’re in crisis. What we’re doing now is outer-reach for weeks-months. We’re trying to reach every last person out there who’s in dire straits.
