The Truth Behind the Arasaka Tower Bombing: What Really Happened in Cyberpunk 2077?

One of those games, Cyberpunk 2077, presents “the future” as something more advanced than we’ll likely see at the relevant periods. In the game, 2077, there are several off-planet colonies, flying cars, and talking smart guns already. I seriously doubt any of that will hold true in 54 years. (Actually, the way things are going, it’s possible that AI guns will become popular in America.)

However, Cyberpunk 2077 also has a connection to the “past,” which is the present. And right now, supporters are commemorating a significant occasion in cyberpunk history. Johnny Silverhand assaulted Arasaka Tower on August 20, 2023, detonated it, and died as a result. His consciousness was, as we all know, put into an engram, which was then shoved into V’s head, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Adam Smasher killed Silverhand, and (spoilers) at the end of the storyline, V had managed to exact revenge on Smasher. Depending on the conclusion you select, either Johnny was in V’s body or not.

The game’s co-star, Silverhand, a rock singer who had previously served in the military and lost an arm, inspiring him to despise both the government and corporations, was memorably portrayed by Keanu Reeves, not just in voice but also in physical face. That progressed from protest songs to…bombing the Arasaka Tower, which players get to act out in the game in a flashback scenario where they take on the role of a briefly immortal Johnny with a pretty awesome pistol while working with a young Rogue.

It’s unidentified what CDPR will do to commemorate this day in practise. Up until this point, they haven’t, and no additional footage from the Phantom Liberty expansion is expected to be shown until Gamescom’s Opening Night Live with Geoff Keighley on August 22. Given The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone, the expansion, which launches on September 26, is rumoured to represent the largest financial and human investment CDPR has made in a single expansion to date. In this new iteration of Johnny Silverhand, Keanu Reeves is joined by Idris Elba, another well-known voice and face combination.

I usually recommend Cyberpunk 2077 to everyone, but after CDPR spent more than two years fixing it, I’m going to say that you should wait to play it until the expansion is released because that will also bring about a significant overhaul of the game’s systems, from the police AI to skills.
