Is a Government Shutdown Imminent? Young Congressman Says It’s All Speaker McCarthy’s Fault

The youngest member of the Congressional delegation, Maxwel Frost, launched a scathing attack on Thursday against House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California ahead of the imminent government shutdown.

“America, in just 15 days from now, when our country comes to a halt, remember who did this to you: Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the far-right House Republicans, who care more about themselves and their politics,” Frost, D-Fla., declared during a speech on the House floor. Unless Congress passes several contentious spending bills by the end of the month, all non-essential federal agencies will cease operations, causing thousands of temporary layoffs and numerous government services to shut down. Lawmakers’ second option is a stopgap measure known as a continuing resolution.

However, it remains unclear whether McCarthy has enough votes for this interim solution as well. Members of the House Freedom Caucus, along with Speaker McCarthy, have been consistently threatening a shutdown and McCarthy’s speech amid ongoing struggles to pass legislation.

Frost warned during the tumultuous week that conservatives and the Speaker’s inability to pass legislation amounted to “front-row seats to a circus,” calling McCarthy and the Republican Party’s far-right elements the ones “spreading the circus in our country.”

The new representative initiated an indictment investigation this week into President Joe Biden’s recent controversial dealings with his now-convicted son, Hunter Biden, over alleged business dealings.

Frost said, “The silver lining in all of this is that instead of working to fund the government, they’re trying to impeach Hunter Biden, who – spoiler alert – is not the President of the United States.”
