Kai Cenat’s Giveaway Event Turns Violent, Police Make Multiple Arrests
Social media influencer Kai Cenat has been accused of inciting violence and unlawful assembly after thousands of people gathered at Union Square in New York City for a giveaway event. The incident resulted in several arrests and injuries to several police officers.
Kai Senat, who has over 4 million subscribers on YouTube, more than 5 million followers on Instagram, and 6.5 million followers on Twitch, announced during a Twitch stream on Wednesday that he would be hosting a “massive giveaway” on Friday at 4 PM in Union Square Park.During the stream, he mentioned that the giveaway would include items such as computers, PlayStation 5s, microphones, keyboards, webcams, gaming chairs, headphones, and gift cards. He expressed the belief that the people of New York truly deserved such an event.
According to Jeffrey Madre, the Chief of NYPD, people started gathering in the park around 3 PM. He stated, “The park and surrounding streets quickly filled up, obstructing the flow of vehicles and pedestrians.”As the crowd grew, “people in the park started committing acts of violence against the police and the public,” Madre added. Some individuals took items from nearby construction sites and engaged in destructive behavior.Madre noted that there were individuals wandering around with fireworks, bricks, and other construction-related items. “People were throwing fireworks, rocks, and other items at the police and at each other,” he said.
Madre reported that the police had to escalate their response to “Level 4” due to the crowd’s unruliness. Initially, the department had activated a “Level 2” response to control and disperse the gathering. As the crowd continued to grow, “the park was overrun, and people began attacking the police and the public,” Madre explained. He stated that some officers were injured, and “numerous” individuals were arrested as the police worked to clear the area. Madre gestured to his uniform, indicating that he was also in the midst of the crowd and was hit with various objects.
According to Madre, the event was disbanded by the police for “safety reasons.” He stated that the Twitch streamer did not properly inform the police about the gathering or seek any permits, leading to the declaration of an unlawful assembly.Madre said that many officers were injured in the chaos, and “a significant number” of people were arrested as the police tried to disperse the crowd. He described his uniform as being covered in dirt, signifying the level of chaos that ensued. Some parents came to the park looking for their children, but Madre said that he wished more parents had come to help disperse the disorderly crowd.
