Skittles and French’s Team Up to Create the Mustard-flavored Candy
On the occasion of National Mustard Day on August 5th, Candy Brand has partnered with French to create its first mustard-flavored Skittles. In a press release, Candies are described as having the “intense taste of mustard” along with a yellow color resembling the “iconic chewy texture” of dipped candy.
Don’t expect to find it on the shelves of mustard or candy stores though. Those adventurous enough to try the new flavor can do so at the “Mustard Mobile” by French, which will be stationed in three American cities – Atlanta on July 31st, Washington on August 2nd, and New York on August 5th. (Exact timings and locations can be found on a website). Fans can also enter online sweepstakes for a chance to win the package.
Food brands often present unique and sometimes quirky flavors in the hope that their viral appeal will boost sales and generate positive media coverage.
The popularity of such food marketing stunts is increasing, if not always, in repetition. Last year, we saw the hot dog-flavored popsicles and the velvet martinis from Candy.
Mars’ ownership brings Skittles to a partnership with French for the first time in a series of holiday stunts. Last year, French sold a mustard-flavored donut in New York. And in 2019, it sold ice cream flavored with yellow mustard, aiming to bring together “two all-American classics, ice cream, and mustard.”
In 2017, Mars acquired French for $4 billion in a deal with Reckitt Benckiser (RB), to expand its portfolio of seasoning companies. It is the best-selling mustard brand in the United States.
